The city of Austin, Texas joined the ranks of other recycling United States cities in a resolution to become zero waste. What this means is that 100% of waste will be recycled in some way or form, eliminating the need for city landfills. Other U.S. cities like San Francisco are all ready leading the way towards zero waste programs. Seattle, Washington is also planning on going zero-waste in the very near future.
Being able to recycle everything we use seemed like science-fiction only just a few years ago. Most American and Canadian cities currently only recycle up to 20 percent of waste, the rest will end up in a local landfill. Here in Calgary, Canada the only thing they accept for recycling is clean paper, cardboard, newspaper, milk jugs, glass and cans.
Pressure your city council to do everything they can to up their recycling program. It may cost a bit a first but in the long run it will pay off in the end.
