Vehicle Computers 101

Cars these days have become more technical. Onboard computers regulate the amount of fuel/air mixture is burned in the engine, different mixtures for those times you need that extra boost or if you are just idling. These have been great technological advancements that have helped reduce the amount of CO2 cars will produce. If you are like me and are trying to maximize the fuel efficiency of your vehicle I cannot stress how important it is to keep your car tuned. These vehicle computers can be tricked into thinking that it needs more air or more gas, and this will cause your vehicle to run inefficiently. The following is a simple checklist to follow when taking your car in for a tune-up.

Dirty Air Filter: a dirty air-filter will rob you of horsepower, expend more gas, and cost you more money at the pump. Check the filter by visually inspecting it. Also consider buying a high-airflow filter, instead of the disposable paper ones. They allow more airflow and, depending on the vehicle, will increase horsepower.
Dirty Spark plugs: a dirty spark plug can cause a bad burn. A bad burn means that gas isn't used and is instead being sent through the exhaust, not good. Have them replaced at each tune-up.
Dirty Fuel-Injectors: dirty fuel-injectors will mean that gas isn't being spread evenly or even at all. If this happens the vehicle computer will think it needs more gas (not very efficient). They can be cleaned easily if maintained.
The Catalytic Converter: the catalytic converter is a unit that is place on the exhaust pipe. (It looks like a small muffler) The converters job is to purify the exhaust to reduce some of its harmful pollutants, however, if a car isn't properly maintained too much gas in the fuel/air mixture will literally clog the converter. If you ever saw Beverly Hills Cop you will know what happens to a car when someone puts a banana into the tail-pipe. If you have a stalling problem this may be the cause.

Well if this sounded complicated don't fret, just mention the four things to check to your mechanic so you can be certain that your vehicle is functioning as efficiently as possible.
