University of Washington's Proposed Environmental College Could Become Reality

The University of Washington could soon establish a College of the Environment, with the aim of providing students a comprehensive education in environmental research, policy and problem solving.

According to the University's website, the college will draw upon the institution's research base and access to natural resources to "engage students, faculty, and community partners in a collaborative effort to articulate and act on environmental problems, starting with those in [its] own region."

The college will enable students interested in an environmentally-focused education to turn to one place, rather than searching through different departments. However, some at the university are concerned that a specific college about the environment could suffer without the research knowledge from other schools, such as biology, forestry and oceanography. According to an article in the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, the level of support for the college the university's Provost has received is on par with the level of criticism.

The university's Board of Regents will hold a vote next month which will determine whether the university's proposed College of the Environment will become a reality.

For more information, check out the University of Washington's website.
