Standby Mode

The United Kingdom's environment minister, Eliot Morley has taken a stand against standby modes in electronics and is currently debating in parliment a decision to have those features banned.

Standby modes has become a popular feature for computers. Some systems take a while to load, so consumers have said that they prefere the sleeping function as it allows for quick access to the internet when they need it. Because of their popular use with computers manufacturers have put them into a growing number of other electronic equipment. It makes sense for computers and even satelite recievers, but what about televisions, stereos or DVD players? These units don't have to load and they can be turned on just as fast as they can be turned off.

Morley believes that a third of the electrical consumption of a television is used up during its standby function. This doesn't make sense for something that could just as easily be turned off. In a survey, the BBC found that there is still a common belief that televisions consume just as much power off as they do left on. This completely untrue. The new generation of televisions can and should be turned off to save energy.
