Secret Plan Uncovered to Capture Remaining Spotted Owls in Canadian Wild

spotted_owl.jpgIn Canada, there are 16 Northern Spotted Owls left in the wild, all of them are in northwestern British Columbia. The Spotted Owl is the most endangered bird in Canada.

In April 2006, the Canadian government created a team of expert scientists to advise on captive breeding of the owls as well as protection of the bird's natural habitat.

After the announcement of the expert team and their objectives, the government changed to goals of the team forgoing the part about natural habitat preservation.

On May 17th it was reported from various sources that a "secret plan" was leaked that calls for capture of the Spotted Owls remaining in the wild.

Further, key owl habitat areas are slated for continued or planned logging, in contrast to the stated intention of the study back in 2006 to preserve owl habitat for reintroduction of the birds into the wild.

Joe Foy, Campaign Director with the Wilderness Committee states: “Putting wild owls in zoos while continuing to log their habitat borders on the criminally insane. It’s a cynical attempt to curry public favour while doing nothing to recover the species. Where will you release the young owls – into a sea of clearcuts?”

Now that doesn't seem very green.

A pdf file of the actual leaked document is available here.
