Scientists/Environmentalists Not Invited to North American Leaders' Summit

Montebello Summit.jpg

Stephen Harper, George Bush and Felipe Calderon met together in Montebello, Quebec for their North American Leaders' Summit (nice place by the way). The agenda includes discussions about border patrol, immigration, and the environment. For advice on the matters they have invited business leaders from across North America for their input into the matter. However, they forgot to invite specialists for the environmental issues.

"Maude Barlow of the Council of Canadians said people shouldn't be fooled about who really sets the agenda at these summits: the 30 business leaders who sit on the North American Competitiveness Council.

The group comprises leaders from 10 companies in each country and includes corporations like Wal-Mart, General Electric and weapons-maker Lockheed Martin. They advise the three national governments on facilitating trade.

Barlow called for a moratorium on the "profoundly anti-democratic" Security and Prosperity Partnership until the citizens of all three countries are consulted and their elected representatives are given oversight over the business-driven initiative." Canadian Press

Protesters will continue their picketing until the summit closes sometime on Tuesday. Things are expected to run smoothly until then but precautions are set so that things don't get out of hand.
