I recently took a family road trip through the Canadian Rockies of Alberta and British Columbia. I don't think I've ever seen such big trees. The only disappointing aspect of the trip was seeing all of the small logging communities and the vast areas of deforested hills. I found this on "The 11th Hour" blog (a new film being released about environmental issues).
"Logging in Canada alone contributes as much greenhouse-gas emissions every year as all the cars in California," she said. Intact forests are carbon storehouses. When logged they release carbon emissions into the air as they degrade, she said. B.C. forests, where some of the world's largest and tallest trees grow, hold more carbon per hectare than any other ecosystem on earth, said Berman, a leading figure in the 1993 Clayoquot Sound protests and co-founder of ForestEthics, an environmental group focused on forest protection."
We need to do what we can to reduce the amount of trees we have to cut down by recycling paper, making the switch to e-mail flyers, and only buying books made from recycled materials. Canada and the US need to do more to protect our forests.
