I've been using my own bags when I go shopping for the past few months now and I have never received a refund from any store. Here in Canada, Superstore (and soon Ikea) charges for every plastic bag you use. In those cases it really puts your priorities into perspective. No one wants to willfully pay extra for bags that will just end up in the garbage when you get home. Superstore is now known for having some of the 'greenest' costumers.
The thing about it is, I don't shop there often (poor produce quality) I prefer getting my food at the good old American Safeway. They usually give me a hard time with the bags (I suppose they're awkward for them to pack or something. However, today I was pleasantly surprised that the cashier knocked off a few pennies for having not used their bags. So all you Safeway shoppers, remind the cashier that you are entitled to a rebate when you bring your own bags.
McDonald's lovers beware, they too charge extra for takeout. I think its 15 extra cents for the paper bag and ketchup packets.
