Offset Your CO2 Footprint

AnshiForestCanopy.jpg

Al Gore has been criticized for being a poor example of reducing CO2 emissions, which are the primary cause of global warming. His traveling to speak at various environmental conferences around the world is said to contribute to the amount of CO2 emitted. There is no doubt this is true, however, telling a traveling salesman not to travel is an unrealistic expectation. Let’s face reality, some of us have to use our cars, or travel on planes for our jobs. Farmers have to operate large CO2 emitting tractors, what then?

There are ways for Americans and Canadians to offset their unavoidable production of CO2 emissions by donating to local agencies that will plant and protect CO2 absorbing trees. At the Tree Canada Foundation website you can use their calculator to measure the amount of CO2 your household or personal travels produce and how many trees you need to have planted to offset that amount. This is a great way to make sure you are doing your part to reduce CO2 emissions and global warming in general. Plus, at Tree Canada all donations that are over $25 are tax-deductible.

I would just like to note that CO2 offsetting is not an excuse for polluting. Everything in your power needs to be done to reduce your emissions before even beginning to consider offsetting as an option. I would only endorse offsetting programs to people who cannot avoid producing some amounts of CO2 emissions.

I also want to warn my readers that there are many schemes out there, so be sure to deal with reputable organizations.
