The standard refrigerator is the most energy consuming appliance in the home. I have read that a fridge can account for up to 60% of your electricity bill! That's huge!
In an attempt at reinventing the fridge to be more energy efficient engineers from the University of Denmark believe they have the solution. They claim to have designed a fridge that uses 60% less energy than the standard cooler. The fridge would also be free of ozone depleting freon (used in standard fridges). The new fridge is powered by magnets that in some way manipulate temperatures.
Don't ask me how they do it. But I know that when they plan on putting it on the market by 2010 I'll be in line for one.
