It seems that people who have GPS navigation systems installed in their vehicles use less gas than those who don't. That's no surprise. I took a road trip to a nearby city this summer. Because I was unfamiliar with the signs or the roads I mainly relied on my compass to find my way around. I ended up spending 20% more on gas than I calculated for the trip. Nothing is more frustrating then getting lost in unfamiliar territory. Add to it the fact that my blood was boiling over the excess gas being wasted in traffic and the avoidable detours. The next time I venture out anywhere new I'm going to map out the routes on MapQuest first. Or I could get the new navigation system.
According to Got2BeGreen.com the Swedes may have found a way to perfect the GPS system for vehicles.
The navigation system does not plan routes by “shortest distance” but rather by finding the path with the least resistance finding the most efficient pathway depending on traffic, time of day and speed limit. The team has tested various routes and estimates that its navigation could provide fuel savings of about four percent.
If you are good at getting around places I envy you, but for the rest of us navigation systems might help make our driving experiences less stressful.

Hmm. Nice idea. I wonder if it can also figure out the way not to drive there in the first place. This would be a tremendously useful feature, especially for music recitals, dentist appointments and visits to my dear mother in law.
