A quick follow-up to Jyle's post yesterday about the "greenwashing" and general under-handed methods employed by British Petroleum in its wanton ravishing of our environment. (Beyond Oil? Give me a break!)
The Alliance for the Great Lakes filed an appeal in Indiana state court today to block a permit allowing BP's Whiting oil refinery to increase the amount of pollution it dumps into Lake Michigan. The permit would allow the refinery to increase its release of ammonia by 54% and "suspended solids" by 35%. An increase by more than half and more than a third, respectively, from the pollution it already releases into Lake Michigan. (Enough to kill off that green logo of BP's - several times over)
The Alliance and other environmental groups assert that the Indiana Office of Environmental Adjudication never served notice of final action on the permit as it should have for each person that submitted written comments on the permit application. Since no one was served with this notice, there was no opportunity to appeal the permit.
Alliance further contends that the permit process was unexpectedly fast-tracked in addition to the failure from the IDEM to provide proper notice.
Alliance simply wants the state to reset the clock on the comment and permit appeal process.
A pretrial hearing will likely be scheduled within the next thirty days.
More reason to write a letter to BP to let them know why you're boycotting their products and services. I also have to wonder what's going on in the Indiana State Office of Environmental Adjudication. The job of governmental oversight and environmental protection doesn't appear to be well served in the state of Indiana.

Lauren,
I know how you feel. It seems so hard for business and people to forgo short term gain for long term good. It's obviously good business to take care of the environment, even if it costs money now. Researching this and my global warming blog can get depressing sometimes!
