Montréal to Ban Plastic Bags By 2009

port montreal aggrandi

The city of Montréal has announced yesterday their plans to ban plastic bags completely by 2009. The province of Québec has already implemented a tax on plastic bags, and the result has been that more and more people are making the change.

There are many incentives to ban the plastic menace. The main one being that it costs the city millions of dollars worth of cleanup as the bags tend to travel long distances in the wind. Retrieving them from trees or power lines is a major concern.

The city of Montréal has been working hard to becoming the first major Canadian city to implement the ban after San Francisco took the pledge last year. Many people welcome the ban and hope that Montréal can be the example for other Canadian cities to follow.
