Man-Made Coral Reefs

tire-reef.thumbnail.jpg
It seemed like a good idea at the time. Throw millions of used-tires into the ocean to help create a habitat for breeding sea-life. With scientists saying that coral reefs throughout the world are shrinking in size why not help by simulating a habitat. I mean we do it all the time with aquariums (a little sunken ship for the gold-fish).

Well the project "Let's Pollute The Ocean" now has to be reversed. The tires that were once tied together have broken loose and are destroying natural reefs as they get pushed around in the sea currents. Some scientists also believe that tires contain harmful toxins that leach into the water. So by doing more harm than good the tires are being brought in. The U.S. Army, Navy and Coast Guard have already removed over 10,000 tires since June. They have a goal of bringing up at least 700,000 tires. Good luck!

That's horrible! You would have thought, seeing as the people who put it there were scientists, that they would have thought of these things before messing up everything.

Well the tires were not too effective but maybe scientists have something with the man-made reefs. Hopefully next time they try to make one they will test it in a controlled environment first!
