The LCBO, or Liquor Control Board of Ontario, announced today that it would no longer offer its customers plastic bags for their purchases.
This decision comes on the heels of Nova Scotia's announcement that its liquor stores would stop carrying plastic bags in the fall of this year. The LCBO had initially planned to merely reduce its number of plastic bags, but in light of the Nova Scotia announcement, LCBO plans were revamped.
According to the Toronto Star, Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty said, "I would encourage all retailers to find ways to move away from plastic bags or reuse plastic bags or better inform shoppers about the alternatives that are available."
LCBO stores will still offer paper bags or cardboard boxes (as well as encouraging customers to bring cloth bags), but will not replenish any current supplies of plastic. It is hoped that this initiative will inspire other organizations to follow suit.
