I loved the McGyver shows because it showed that you can use normal home items to do extraordinary things. Well the same principles can be applied to your home insulation.
If you are like me and you don' have a tone of extra cash to make your home more efficient, here are a few tips that could help.
1. Look at windows and doors for leaks. Look for condensation, frost or icing on the windows. A great cheap and very old way to help insulate your windows is to use heavy, preferable wool drapes. You may be able to pick up some at the thrift store.
2. Turn down the thermostat on your hot water heater. Raise the temperature if needed. Also, place a Insulating jacket around the water heater. This may cost you just $20.
3. Insulate hot water pipes near the boiler and the cold water pipes that come from the source to your home. This may cost you between $10-20.
P.S. Please don't heat your garages, that's just a highly unnecessary waste.
