In Search of the Green Cocktail

martini.jpgNo, this isn’t St. Patrick’s Day, where folks drink green-colored beer and wake up the next morning feeling a little, well, green.

I’m talking green, as in what we’re all about here at Hugg, as in organic.

What better way to celebrate the end of another workweek than settling down with a good friend and your favorite cocktail? And I don’t mean to diminish your well-earned respite from the daily grind, but just how green is that martini?

Well, don’t worry, I know you just want a break from the world now and then, but it isn’t that hard to actually help save the world (just a little, tiny bit) while relaxing and sipping your favorite adult beverage.

From Organic Spirit Company’s Juniper Green Dry Gin to Butte Creek Beer, there are a growing number of organic brewers and distillers that offer the world-weary “Hugger” the chance to be green even as they imbibe a drink or two down at the local pub.

Other examples of organic spirits include:
Papagayo Organic Rum - produced in Paraguay enabling 800 family farmers an income for their organically grown sugarcane.

Square One Vodka – made from organically grown rye and an organic fermentation process.

Trinchero Family Estates - a California-based wine producer that sells its Bandit Cabernet Sauvignon in a tall purple box instead of a bottle. A box is lighter than a bottle, requiring less fuel to transport, and is made of recycled paper. The wine is pretty good too, with “aromas of blackberries and toasty oak that echo on the palate”.

There are even bars that specialize in the eco-friendly cocktail, such as the bar at Counter’s, a vegetarian bistro in New York’s East Village.

So let’s all raise a toast – an organic toast, that is – to being green. Who knows? It just might make happy hour just a little bit happier!
