IKEA Taxing Plastic Bags

IKEA.gif

The Swedish furniture giant has taken a stand against their stores use of plastic bags. IKEA takes pride in providing consumers with inexpensive, quality furniture. They also have become leaders in the cooperate world of being environmentally friendly. IKEA is proud of the fact that their showrooms are energy efficient and as is the case in Calgary, powered completely by wind turbines.

In the United Kingdom, IKEA has placed a 5 pence levy on every plastic bag dispensed, taking their chances on a consumer back-lash. IKEA was pleasantly surprised that the levy yielded the desired results; depleting plastic bag use by 95% for the 2006 year. In the United States, IKEA has just begun charging 5 cents per plastic bag. Implementation of the plastic bag levy for Canada is still in deliberation.

No matter what happens with IKEA Canada, it is still a good idea to use reusable bags for all of your shopping.

Becoming environmentally conscience is not about being inconvenienced, it's about relearning some bad habits.

Good for Ikea. People should pay the price if they're going to contribute to ruinig our environment.
