Honda Introduces Next Generation Hyrdogen Powered Car

Honda's FCX Clarity fuel cell vehicleHonda has released its latest generation hydrogen car, the FCX Clarity, that incorporates an advanced “V Flow” fuel cell platform. Honda plans to lease the car to a limited number of retail customers in Southern California this summer.

And Honda isn’t the only kid on the block developing hydrogen technology. Chevy has the Equinox, Ford is pursuing a fuel cell program which includes the fuel cell Explorer, Nissan is touting its X-Trail FCV, and BMW has it’s Hydrogen 7 (almost sounds like a spaceship).

I haven’t owned a car in years (I’m lucky that I can live and work in a city where everything I need is usually within walking distance and what isn’t I get to through mass transit or City Car Share), but I am encouraged to see major car makers developing these technologies, though there is one obvious stumbling block to the widespread use of hydrogen technology.

I can sum it up in three words: Fill ‘er up.

Until there is an infrastructure to support the technology, the chances of seeing one on the road, much less actually driving one, may still be decades away.

That’s no reason not to keep moving forward with innovation and imagination.
