June 5th marks World Environment Day, this year hosted by the city of Wellington, New Zealand.
The focus of this year’s event is breaking the world’s “carbon addiction”.
World Environment Day was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1972 at the start of the Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment. That same day a resolution was adopted leading to the start UN Environment Programme.
New Zealand is one of the first countries to pledge a carbon-neutral future, so it is fitting that Wellington would host this year’s event with the focus on reducing carbon emissions and effectively dealing with global climate change.
