
3. Turn down your Water Heater
If your water heater is set on high, chances are you're wasting energy. A heater set 10°F more than your family's consumption needs will cost you $650 extra per year. As a rule of thumb, a typical family of four should have the thermostat set on a low (110°F) or medium (140°F), unless everyone takes showers at the same time.
Turning down the water heater is also a good idea to safeguard against accidental burns at the faucet.
