Green Power Available to Canadians in Alberta and Saskatchewan

Pincher Creek, Alberta: Wind Farm

Canada is abundant in water, 9% of Canada is made up of fresh water lakes and rivers. Hydroelectric power is the main source of energy is Québec, Ontario, Manitoba, and British Colombia. Though, what about Alberta and Saskatchewan? Well, they are not so lucky. Since the west is rich in oil and gas everything here is powered by it, natural gas for the heating and oil or coal for electricity. Environment lovers need not fear because there are alternative energy sources available through their electric companies.

Alberta and Saskatchewan’s electric companies are beginning to offer alternative sources of power for those who object to their predominant use of natural gas and coal burning generators. Alberta’s ENMAX Electric Company now offers Greenmax, a program that gives you the option of receiving your electricity from 50% or 100% wind energy. There is an increased rate for Greenmax services ($6.25 or $12.50 extra per month) but it ensures that you are living a low CO2 emission lifestyle. Saskatchewan’s SaskPower Electric Company offers GreenPower that offers customers wind-powered electricity for only an additional $2.50 for every 100 kilowatt-hour per month. Essentially, the more households who sign on for the programs the more wind generators will be produced in the future to meet their growing demands.

It's about time that Alberta did something that was energy efficient! I look forward to signing up for this Greenmax porgram.

The reason I didn't mention any other Canadian province is because Alberta and Saskatchewan are the primary users of coal, gas, or oil to produce electricity. BC, Ontario, Quebec, Manitoba and Newfoundland all have well established hydro-electrical plants. Nothing is greener than what they already have.
