Earth Day is just days away. Here are some ways you can carry out the principles behind the day, both on the 22nd and all year long.
Attend an Earth Day Event
Many cities across Canada, the US and around the world are offering Earth Day events throughout April. Toronto is hosting an Earth Day festival featuring exhibits and activities. The Regina Public Library is presenting on guerrilla gardening. One of Maine's biggest Earth Day celebrations is being held in Bar Harbor. Knoxville, Tennessee opens the Market Square Farmer's Market. Residents of Dumaguete City in the Philippines are holding a race and river clean-up. Dozens of cities are holding garbage pick-up events, tree plantings and workshops.
Help Kids Learn about Sustainability
When I was in the fourth grade, CFCs became the hot-button environmental issue. It was the first time I started thinking about how human activities impact the environment and I wanted to learn more. We as adults are so used to ecological issues, but don't underestimate the passion kids can feel for creating positive change. Visit local schools and libraries and see if you can lend a hand in Earth Day events they might be hosting.
Organize an Event of your Own
If your local school or library isn't hosting an event, volunteer to organize one yourself, or expand into the wider community and hold a fundraiser. These are great ways to get to know your neighbours, plant some trees and share ideas for sustainable living. Find a green charity or organization that you like and donate the funds from your event.
Change One Habit
If you drive to work, take the bus one day. If you take the bus, try your bike. Bring a travel mug to your favourite coffeeshop every day and skip the disposable cup. Investigate composting at home. This is the perfect time to re-evaluate your lifestyle choices to reduce the impact you make on the environment. They don't have to be overly complicated either; it only takes a handful of small positive changes to turn sustainable living into habit.
