Durban, South Africa has introduced a pilot program for school-aged children the responsibility we have at protecting the environment. The program is being called "Environmental Scouts," and the children involved call themselves monitors because they have the responsibility of educating others on the importance of recycling and using renewable energy.
The new program was begun by the Umhlangane River Conservancy (URC) who hope that their idea will spread to other schools in South Africa. If their program catches on they hope that it could be networked internationally.
"This idea started to grow and I thought about how we could implement a similar concept at home. It took three years to get it off the ground." - Spokesman at URC
Making the necessary lifestyle changes has always been a difficult task for us older people. Though, using children as a tool for changing and implementing community environmental practices is a very effective method.
