Easy Tips for an Eco-Friendly Easter

For many people, the biggest sign that Easter is approaching is the incredible proliferation of artificially-sweetened chocolate, plastic toys and decorations that are rarely kept for next year. If you to have a more natural Easter celebration, there are many fun and easy ways to do so.

Use Natural Easter Egg Dye

Using vegetable dyes instead of artificial dyes is a more natural choice for this popular Easter craft. Virtually any colour imaginable can be created using things like blueberries and grape juice (light blue); old coffee grounds (beige); paprika (orange); and cranberry juice (pink). Even onion skins can be used. As an added bonus, the all-natural dye and the eggs are both safe for composting. Check out Green Living Ideas for instructions and more colour recipes.

Look for Organic or Fair Trade Chocolate

Even if they aren't bunny-shaped, look for chocolate that is free of pesticides or supports better working conditions for cocoa farmers. These days, organic or fair trade chocolate can be found in many chain grocery stores and, of course, local organic markets.

Decorate With Thrifted or Recycled Items

Visit your local thrift store for used baskets. Shred those scented perfume magazine inserts or coloured newspaper pages for lining. If you're fortunate enough to already have grass outside this time of year, use it as well, or buy wheatgrass from your local market. Brightly coloured fabric from old clothing also makes good lining for baskets or gifts.

Make Leftovers Useful
After Easter is over, phone local shelters and food banks to ask about donating leftover decorations or chocolate. Extra paper or craft materials can be composted, recycled or used for next year.
