Deep Budget Cuts for Environment Canada More Than Mere Rumor

The Environmental News Agency has reported that, according to documents acquired by The Globe and Mail, the Canadian government plans on cutting spending on climate change programs by 80% for Environment Canada, and aims at another 40% for global warming programs in other ministries. In addition, federal budgets for wildlife programs and services have been completely frozen.

I’m an American, so I won’t presume to know or understand Canadian politics in any substantive way. Frankly, I have enough to worry about with George Bush’s environmental policies.

Nonetheless, as there has been no official public statement from Steven Harper’s conservative government, it appears as if there is a desire to hide from the public the true intentions in regard to his environmental policy.

Ironically, Prime Minister Harper heads to New York on Monday to give a speech to leaders of 80 nations on his approach to climate change. No doubt he and George Bush will have much to talk about.

Gwen Barlee, Western Canada Wilderness Committee Policy Director, says her organization is “appalled” at the news and that the Harper government is “…going to hear from outraged Canadians."
