Conserve Water by Avoiding a Leaking Toilet

leaking_toilet.jpg

We all know that a leaking faucet will expend large amounts of water needlessly into the sewers, what about toilets? One silently leaking toilet can account for at least 7000 gallons of wasted fresh water each month. The impact it will have on the environment is unnecessary, so check those toilets.

Go to your local hardware store and get a dye in the plumbing section, or if you have food colouring lying around try that. Simply apply a few drops of the dye into the tank to give it a colour and watch to see if there is any of the dyed water trickling into the bowl. If water is seeping through, that means there is a leak at the seal inside the tank. Try cleaning the seal and if that doesn't solve the leak replace it. It will only cost you a few bucks, but it will conserve our municipal fresh water sources.

There are also devices you can have installed on your toilets that will automatically shut off the water supply when a leak is detected. This is more of an advanced solution for toilet leaks but is great for frequent travellers who are rarely at home, because a small leak could mean a flooded house by the time you get home.
