I personally am against putting up Christmas lights outside. I just don't believe they serve any purpose. Then again I never leave the front house lights on either. Well if you are going to put up the lights to help you get into the festive mood consider a few ideas to help reduce their carbon impact.
Tom wrote a great post about the benefits of using LCD Christmas lights so I won't repeat that, but what I will say is that you should have your outdoor lights on a timer so that they can stay on when neighbours take notice an shut off when everyone sleeping. Timers are cheap and can be purchased for under $20. And please, stop thinking in terms of "will this pay off in saved electricity bills." Anything that will save energy will be a benefit not just on your wallet but on the environment, and for that you can't attach a price-tag.

That's good advice. There's a house on my street who leaves their lights on night AND day! I feel like writing a letter...
