Fuyang, China is a small insignificant poor town. But they put themselves on the may by issuing a city-wide ban on private transportation. For a week the city had to use public transportation to get around. The results was that residents saved $160,000 on gas they didn't need to buy and for a week they had significantl better air quality.
With the Beijing Olympics coming up, organizers are getting serious about improving the air quality. Beijing is currently one of the smoggiest cities in the world. The Chinese governments hopes that by upgrading old coal buring facilities they can improve the air quality just in time when all eyes are on the Olympics.
They are on the right track for improving the environment. The question is, can they improve enough before the Olympics arrive? Will they continue to make changes after the Olympics have come and gone?
