Canadian Idle Not

freephoto1minicooper.JPG

In cold weather snaps, many Canadians frequently idle their cars.

Idling cars unnecessarily causes carbon dioxide to enter into the atmosphere. The Biosphere Institute of the Bow Valley, in the Canadian Rockies, has launched a "Care for our Mountain Air" campaign focused on vehicle idling, car pooling, car maintenace and driving behaviour.

The Institute offers up these four anti-idling tips:

1. "Reduce warm-up idling to no more than 2 minutes, even in cold weather."
2. "Except in traffic, turn off your engine if you are going to be stopped for more than 60 seconds."
3. "Avoid using a remote car starter."
4. "In temperatures below 0, use a block heater to warm the engine."

For more information, check out the Biosphere Institute online.
