Best Western Location Makes Bigger Effort

Best Western is the "World's Largest Hotel Chain" (according to their website) so it was impressive to me that, while planning an upcoming trip, my wife discovered that the Best Western in Kamloops (where we are going) has gone green. We've never been to a hotel that has gone through such extensive measures to be kind to the environment.

The hotel has implemented a comprehensive recycling program for a variety of materials. Some ways they have accomplished this is through targeting newspaper and cardboard and donating used soaps and amenities to local shelters and charities.

In terms of energy conservation, they have put as many low-energy lighting fixtures as possible throughout the hotel. They've also replaced their HVAC and cooling system with solar panels and ground loop heat pumps.

Additionally, they try to eliminate the use of hazardous chemicals and synthetic perfumes by using unbleached Kraft and recycled paper, replacing aerosol products with ozone-friendly alternatives and using salt chlorinator in their pool.

In the rooms, water efficient showerheads, tap aerators and low flow toilets reduce water waste. Also, visitors have the choice of reusing their towels and bed sheets rather than having them changed every day.

Hopefully, more hotels will begin to do the same.
