A prominent news item in 2007 was the record Arctic ice melt. I reported on it several times both here and in my blog at GlobalWarmingisReal.com.
It was also reported last week in Terra Daily that the condition and rapid melt of the Arctic ice was a top concern for Canadians in 2007. Many fear that the Arctic ice may have passed a tipping point (something you don’t know until you’ve already passed it) and that the Arctic may be ice-free in summer years or even decades sooner than models predicted.
This isn’t good news of course, but I want to try to leave the year on a positive note, so if there is a silver lining to this, perhaps it is that 2007 may very well be another tipping point: that of awareness. A grassroots awareness that we face some very serious challenges in the coming yours to help insure a sustainable future. And a desire to do something positive about it.
The sobering news won’t stop coming in the new year, and it will likely get worse. As a collective New Years resolution, let’s then redouble our efforts to build a sustainable world for us and those that follow.
Happy New Year!
