Another "Bright" Australian Idea

compact-fluorescent-bulb.jpg

Have you taken the challenge to switch your 60 watt or 100 watt bulbs with the more energy efficient compact florescent bulbs? The initial switch was a big step for me to take because I have this nasty habit of always buying the cheapest stuff off the shelf. So to ease into it I just replace a few bulbs at a time. It seems that the government of Australia has the same idea. Got 2 Be Green reported that they are going to phase out the use of incandescent bulbs by 2010.

Australia plans to phase out incandescent bulbs by 2010 in efforts to become the world’s first national government to phase out incandescent light bulbs in favor for the energy efficient compact fluorescent bulbs (CFLs) which use about 80% less electricity to produce the same amount of light.

Good idea in theory. In practice, however, they need to deal with the mercury issue. Not enough people know about it, and it's going to cause big problems when these things start leaching into the landfills.
