Airline Tickets Going Electronic

Paper Ticket Ban.JPG

"Starting next June, 50,000 trees a year will be left standing instead of being made into paper airline tickets, thanks to a new policy by the International Air Transport Association (IATA). IATA, whose members account for 94% of all flights worldwide, is phasing out paper tickets in favor of electronic ones starting June 1, 2008." - AboutMyPlanet.com

I think that the move towards electronic ticketing is a great idea. It will save on paper needed to print the tickets as well as lower the costs to the customers. I'm not so sure how the airline will be able to identify their passengers though? Will this mean a new type of ID card for passengers? Well whatever the alternative is I hope its not something that can be forgotten or lost easily.

Sure, the travel agents will save on paper, but now instead of a 3x8 ticket, people will have to print out 2 full letter-sized sheets, one with the e-ticket and another with all the fine print, just like Air Canada and Westjet already use.

That's true Dave (I hate it when I have to print colour). I know the United States and Canada has a database for their post 9/11 security, so how hard would it be to just apply a ticket to a unique account. With the electronic ticket on your account all you would have to do is show your ID. Wouldn't that work?
