To follow up with yesterday’s post, a “road map” agreement has been reached that will point the way for further negotiations in the coming two years toward a global pact to deal with climate change.
The European Union agreed to drop its proposal to include the specific targets of a 25–40% cut in greenhouse gas emissions by 2020, leaving only the U.S. rejection of a proposal from developing nations, the G77, for technological and financial assistance from wealthy nations in dealing with global warming.
The U.S. thus unleashed a firestorm from the assembled delegation and was virtually “booed into submission”.
The agreement paves the way for formal talks, to be completed by 2009, forging a pact between participating nations to replace the Kyoto Protocol in 2012.
